Kathballu Dominates in Orleans Stakes
Five D Thoroughbreds’ homebred Bluegrass Cat daughter Kathballu became her sire’s seventh individual stakes winner this year, winning the seven-furlong Orleans Stakes at Delta Downs by eight lengths with little urging from jockey Julien Leparoux. Kathballu recorded her third win of the season in dominant fashion, despite carrying top weight in the eight-horse field.
A chestnut filly out of the Devil’s Bag mare Abba Gold trained by Kenny McPeek, 2/5 Orleans favorite Kathballu had run second to five-time Graded stakes winner Sarah Sis in the Grade 3 Chicago Handicap at Arlington Park in June, and she placed third in the 2015 Grade 3 Victory Ride Stakes at Belmont Park. She has earned $296,864 with a lifetime record of five wins, three seconds, and three thirds. Kathballu is a full sister to multiple Graded stakes winner Kathmanblu, who earned $584,327.
With Kathballu’s black-type win, Bluegrass Cat enhances his position as the leading California-based sire by number of 2016 stakes winners, and he remains the leading active sire in California by lifetime black-type winners.
